Trusted Oral Surgery In Austin, TX
At Central Park Pediatric Dentistry, we’re committed to providing comprehensive dental care for every stage of your child’s development. That’s why we’ve partnered with Dr. Kevin E. Lew at Capital Oral Surgery, a specialist in oral surgery, to offer expert wisdom teeth removal for your children and teenagers. This collaboration ensures that your child receives the highest level of care in a familiar and comforting environment, making the process as smooth and stress free as possible.
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last set of adult or permanent teeth to come in, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. You might also hear some people refer to them as the third molars, as they are all the way in the back of your mouth. Everyone has wisdom teeth—for some, wisdom teeth have plenty of room to grow in properly and they never have any trouble. For others, they may not erupt all the way and become impacted in the gums. As a result, your child may experience pain or discomfort, which could lead to cavities, gum disease or other oral health issues. In that case, we may recommend your child have them removed to prevent further complications down the road.
Before Wisdom Tooth Removal
At Central Park Pediatric Dentistry, we work with a trusted oral surgeon, Dr. Kevin E. Lew, to make sure your child’s wisdom teeth removal goes according to plan. First, you and your child will have an initial consultation with Dr. Lew, where he will evaluate their mouth and wisdom teeth to determine their health and condition. This is a great time for you to ask questions and express any concerns you may have. Dr. Lew will go over the procedure in detail with you so you know exactly what to expect. It is an outpatient procedure conveniently performed at one of our Central Park Pediatric Dentistry offices so that means your child will be able to go home after.
The First Signs of Wisdom Teeth Coming In
You may be wondering—how will I know when my child’s wisdom teeth are coming in? There are a few signs that you and your child may notice.

Care Following Your Child’s Wisdom Tooth Removal
On the day of your child’s surgery, Dr. Lew will perform the procedure under anesthesia at one of our locations. Your child will not be awake nor will they feel anything at all. It is important that your child get plenty of rest after the procedure and replace the gauze often to prevent infection. They can resume normal activities the following day, but we recommend you take it easy for at least one week as directed by Dr. Lew to help you heal. Soreness is to be expected, so make sure they apply cold compresses and take pain medication as needed. Stick to soft foods for the first couple of days before transitioning to semi-solid foods and make sure they avoid anything chewy or spicy! It is important that you still maintain your good oral hygiene habits, but they should avoid brushing the extraction site as that could cause irritation. If your child experiences a fever, any serious pain, bleeding or notices a bad taste in their mouth, contact us immediately.
